The Lake Tarpon, FL bass tournament just concluded and what an amazing event it is. It’s been nearly 40 years and it’s still going strong with people from all over the United States attending including regulars, first timers ranging from the young to old and in-between.
It all started back in 1979 when a group of local fishing guides decided to go fishing instead of bowling. One of the regulars 71 year old George Medders (a fishing guide himself) recalls the moment, “We just got together one evening and said, ‘Hey, everybody’s going bowling, let’s just go fishing.”
Gary Muchler has been the one organizing the bass tournament for the past 15 years. The event is more of a low-stakes competition, which does not operate under any sanctioned Bass Pro entity. It’s simply an awesome bass tournament for fishing lovers who get together during the week to catch some awesome bass.
“It’s more about bragging rights and beer money for the weekend,” Sam Smith, another local fisherman said. “It’s something to break up the week.”
Even though its meant to be a fun time Gary Muchler tries to balance between lenient and by the book. There are rules and there is a $40 entry fee but beyond that everyone enjoys the non-professional level of competition.
So make your reservations for Lake Tarpon Springs, FL hotels and get your gig n pigs out, your spinner baits, your trick worms and have a great time. See you all next year.
